The Ohio Valley will become the target of drenching thunderstorms on a daily basis into next week, causing unwanted water to funnel downstream into the flood-ravaged lower Mississippi Valley.
The stage is set for this persistent unsettled weather as warm, humid air expands northward to the Ohio Valley this weekend, then remains firmly in place well into next week.
With each storm system that rides along the rim of that steamy air, thunderstorms will rumble across the Ohio Valley. The thunderstorms will even drop into the lower Mississippi Valley on occasion.
Flooding downpours will be a serious concern with many of the thunderstorms due to the plethora of moisture in place.
The danger will also be present, potentially on a daily basis across the Ohio Valley, for somethunderstorms to turn severe with damaging winds.
Rain from the thunderstorms into next week could total 2 to 6 inches across the Ohio Valley. Some places could receive at least half of that rainfall in a matter of hours as a result of the sporadic nature of the thunderstorms.
During these torrential downpours is when flooding in low-lying and urban areas will rapidly occur. Already-swollen streams could also be forced out of their banks.
Even if flooding problems do not ensue, the downpours will create hazards for motorists by reducing visibility and heightening the risk of vehicles hydroplaning on highways.
The prospect of heavy rain may raise fears that the Ohio River will return to record flood levels.
While a repeat of the recent historic crests is not expected, the upcoming rain will briefly halt the river's current trend of subsiding and keep levels above normal.
"The flow downstream could then slow or stall recession, or perhaps even lead to modest secondary rises on the [lower] Mississippi," stated AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.
